5 Goal-setting Tips From The Experts

Your dreams will remain dreams unless you convert them into goals.  All goals need to be specific,measurable, yours, have a time limit and be in writing.
We’ve gathered advice from the top minds in the self transformation industry. Here are the five experts with their tips on what you should be doing when setting and achieving your goals.
1: Nathaniel Branden, Author of the Six Pillars of Self-Esteem
Start with the most important goal there is – your self-esteem.

  • If you are lacking self-confidence, the goals you set may not line up with your skills or values. You don’t think highly of yourself, that you may not realise your big dreams because you’re afraid that you’re not good enough to reach them.
  • Before you even begin to set big goals, you should ask yourself where your self-esteem is at. If you are not sure, it’s best to see an expert like a psychologist or a life-coach.

2: Tony Robbins, Life-Coach and Motivational Speaker; Author of Awaken the Giant Within
Write your goals down quickly without editing yourself.
Jot down your little goals, your big dreams and everything in between without thinking about them too deeply. Don’t hold yourself back, but do make them simple to begin with so that you can add to them later.
3: Diane Costigan, Executive, Career, and Life Coach and Senior Career Advisor with Shannon & Manch LLP.
Try guidelines instead of concrete goals that force you in a certain direction.
Sometimes we force ourselves into a corner by creating hard-and-fast goals. Instead of doing this, why not create a guideline that would be more comfortable to complete.
For example, I may find it difficult to stop buying clothing. Instead of saying “I will not buy clothes this month”, I could say “If I still want that item in two days, I will consider getting it”.
4: Jennifer Bezoza, Executive Coach and Organizational Development Consultant
Start from a happy and confident frame of mind.
If you begin in a negative frame of mind, you’ll set yourself up for failure. Not in achieving the goal itself, but in creating goals you are worthy of. Big, happy, dream-filled goals!
5: Ann Mehl, Executive Coach
Make sure that your goals and values line up.
For example, if you decide that you want a great big mansion in the city because your partner loves big houses, but you are a bit of a quiet, country person yourself, you could be setting yourself up for disaster. In this situation, compromise might be the way forward.
Be true to your big life values when you are setting your goals. Your small goals are a reflection of your identity.
